Background of the Study :
The Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming various sectors by enabling seamless connectivity and automation. In higher education, IoT adoption in university hostels can improve resource management, enhance security, and streamline daily operations. This study aims to analyze the adoption and impact of IoT technologies in university hostels at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State. The research will examine how IoT devices, such as smart locks, energy management systems, and occupancy sensors, are integrated into hostel infrastructure to improve operational efficiency and resident safety. By collecting and analyzing data on usage patterns, system performance, and user satisfaction, the study will provide insights into the benefits and challenges associated with IoT implementation in an academic setting (Ibrahim, 2023). The analysis will involve both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, including surveys, interviews, and data analytics. Furthermore, the study will assess the cost-effectiveness of IoT solutions and their potential to reduce operational expenses. Emphasis will be placed on the scalability and sustainability of these technologies, particularly in the context of Nigerian higher education institutions. The findings are expected to inform policy decisions and encourage wider adoption of IoT in university hostels, ultimately enhancing the living conditions and overall experience of students (Olu, 2024; Adeniran, 2025).
Statement of the Problem :
Despite the potential benefits of IoT, its adoption in university hostels in Nigeria is still in its infancy. Many institutions continue to rely on traditional management systems that are inefficient and prone to errors. At the Federal University of Technology, Minna, there is limited data on how IoT devices impact hostel management and resident satisfaction. The absence of standardized protocols and the high initial cost of IoT solutions further deter adoption. Additionally, challenges such as data security, system interoperability, and maintenance issues can impede the successful integration of IoT technologies in hostel settings. This study seeks to address these challenges by evaluating the current state of IoT adoption in university hostels, identifying the key factors that influence its effectiveness, and proposing strategies to overcome existing barriers. By understanding the advantages and limitations of IoT in this context, the research aims to provide actionable recommendations for enhancing hostel management, improving energy efficiency, and ensuring the safety of residents. The outcomes of this study are expected to facilitate the broader adoption of IoT solutions in academic institutions across Nigeria, leading to improved operational efficiency and a better quality of life for students (Ibrahim, 2023; Olu, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the current level of IoT adoption in university hostels.
To identify challenges and benefits associated with IoT implementation in this setting.
To provide recommendations for enhancing IoT integration in university hostels.
Research Questions:
What is the current state of IoT adoption in university hostels at the Federal University of Technology, Minna?
What are the main challenges and benefits experienced by stakeholders?
How can IoT systems be optimized to improve hostel management and resident satisfaction?
Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it evaluates the adoption of IoT in university hostels, highlighting its potential to improve resource management, security, and operational efficiency. The findings will inform policy and guide the integration of IoT solutions in academic institutions, thereby enhancing student living conditions and reducing operational costs (Olu, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to university hostels at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and does not extend to other university facilities or external institutions.
Definitions of Terms:
